Think Play Do. Not a slogan. A sequence.

Curiosity Built

Giles Runeckles — creative practitioner, Vancouver BC

Thinking in terms of delight, not merely satisfaction.

I’ve been designing and making things most of my life — and I’m still the same person who wanted to understand how things worked, what they were made of, why some things felt right and others didn’t. That curiosity has never stopped. It’s the engine.

The practice moves across identity and brand, print, environmental graphics, exhibition design, spatial environments, and objects. Not because these are the services on offer — but because these are the forms that briefs have taken. A brief that doesn’t fit neatly into a category is exactly where the work gets genuinely interesting.

The Listel Hotel trusted me with their complete identity — from the mark to the walls. Air New Zealand needed design thinking that worked across channels and continents. The BC Spot Prawn Festival needed a campaign that felt as particular and handmade as the product itself. Mad About Food required thought and strategy from the get-go. From tone to visuals and medium, with the eventual goal in opening it's flagship retail expression.

The brief determines the form. The scale of the brief doesn’t change the approach.

Wonder

Colour, shape, form, and material have intrigued me for as long as I can remember. Perhaps the most significant aspect of my practice is the understanding that regardless of the success of any design solution, there is always the potential for a better way of communicating ideas and doing things. That possibility is what keeps the work alive.

Experience suggests it pays to increase your Wonder Power.

Connection

The most interesting discoveries happen in the spaces — where art whispers to craft and design listens to both. I design like a scientist, craft like a poet, and question everything like a curious child with really good tools.

That instinct for connection — between disciplines, media, and experience — is what I bring to every brief. The more diverse the inputs, the more interesting the outcome.

How I Work

The act of designing is never just about a finished product. It’s a continuing narrative — from the conceptual thinking that informs the vision, through playful exploration and experimentation, to the people it touches and the places it transforms.

Think. Play. Do. Not a slogan. A sequence.

Kinship

With good experiences comes good relationships. Fostering these through engagement, honesty, and value is what my work is all about. I believe in relationships built on straight-forward principles, client service, and genuine kinship.

From initial creative to final production, everyone involved is passionate about what they do — and I think it shows.

One Planet

I’m proud to work with individuals and suppliers who are influencing positive change — creating work that generates discussion, conveys important information, and celebrates the human capacity to envision and dream. I applaud all businesses that employ fair workplace policies and sound environmental practices as vehicles for sustainable growth and societal equity.

Location

I acknowledge that I live and create on the traditional, unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

“The brief doesn’t have a category yet? Good. Those are the ones I’m most interested in.”

Kind words

I thank them for both their work and honesty

  • Giles always brings a wealth of wonderful, innovative ideas to our projects. He’s not singularly focused on graphic design. He is extremely adept in bringing other disciplines to the mix. And probably more than anybody I have ever worked with, he understands our hotel, it’s business and has a true, organic feel for it.
